Why Mandarin Interpreting Is Its Own Category in the UK
Mandarin sits in a different lane from most other UK interpreter pairs.
Mandarin (Putonghua) is the official language of the PRC, Taiwan and one of Singapore's official languages; both PRC and Taiwan Mandarin are mutually intelligible in spoken form. Cantonese is a separate spoken language and needs a Cantonese interpreter: most Hong Kong BN(O) arrivals are Cantonese-first, though many are Mandarin-competent. Simplified (PRC, Singapore) versus Traditional (HK, Macau, Taiwan) is a written distinction that only matters for document translation. We can put an NDA in place on request.

Mandarin Interpreter and Chinese Translation Together
Interpreting and document translation are separate services with different production paths, but the same booking can carry both. The interpreter attends a solicitor or counsel consultation about a PRC birth certificate, a Hong Kong marriage certificate, a PRC criminal record extract, a diploma from a PRC or Taiwan university, or a corporate document that needs to accompany a UKVI application, or a Companies House registration. Certified Chinese translation, in Simplified or Traditional characters, is available on request, subject to availability.
See Chinese document translation for the paperwork side of a Chinese file. Same rate card in sterling, invoiced together on request.
Frequently Asked Questions
How quickly can you book a Mandarin interpreter in the UK?
Urgent requests are confirmed as soon as an interpreter is free, subject to availability.
How much does a Mandarin interpreter cost in the UK?
Remote (phone or video) Mandarin interpreting starts at £49.99 per 30 minutes. On-site business or commercial starts at £149.99 per hour. Court and legal work and police station attendance under PACE Code C are quote only. Final price confirmed before booking, based on language, location, date, duration and availability. Minimum booking applies, and travel outside the city is quoted separately. All rates fixed in writing before the assignment.
Can you provide a Cantonese interpreter instead of Mandarin?
Yes. Cantonese is a separate spoken language from Mandarin, not a dialect, and it needs a Cantonese interpreter. Many Hong Kong Chinese who arrived under the BN(O) visa route are Mandarin-competent but Cantonese-first; for a Cantonese-first speaker, book Cantonese specifically. Cantonese interpreters are available on request, subject to availability. Confirm the setting (business, BN(O) casework) when you book so we match the specialism.
What is the difference between Simplified and Traditional Chinese?
Simplified and Traditional are a written distinction, not a spoken one. Simplified characters are used in the PRC and Singapore; Traditional characters are used in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. For interpreting (spoken work), both PRC Mandarin (Putonghua) and Taiwan Mandarin are mutually intelligible, so the same Mandarin interpreter can handle a PRC party, a Taiwan party or a Singapore party in the same hearing. For document translation the distinction matters: Simplified for PRC filings, Traditional for HK, Macau and Taiwan filings. Certified Chinese translation covers both, on request, subject to availability.
Do you also handle Chinese document translation?
Yes. See our Chinese translation page for certified Chinese document translation (birth certificates, marriage certificates, criminal records, PRC diplomas, corporate documents, notarised powers of attorney) covering both Simplified and Traditional Chinese, on request, subject to availability. Same rate card in sterling, invoiced together if you need both interpreter and translated documents on one matter.
