Why Punjabi Interpreting Is Its Own Category in the UK
The Punjabi assignment has two structural specifics an English-first workflow tends to miss. First, script and community: British Sikh Punjabi is written in Gurmukhi and British Pakistani Punjabi is written in Shahmukhi, and where the client's formal or written life is conducted in Urdu the correct booking may be Urdu instead. Spoken Punjabi is largely mutually intelligible across the two communities, so oral assignments almost always work with a single interpreter; the variant only matters when written material is sight-translated on the day or where community expectation is specific. Second, gender-sensitive assignment: women's health, disclosure appointments and honour-based violence casework routinely require a female interpreter, which can be requested, subject to availability. State the variant and the gender requirement at booking.

Punjabi Interpreter and Punjabi/Urdu Translation Together
Interpreting and document translation are separate services with different production paths, but the same booking can carry both. A typical file has paperwork on both sides of a matter: an interpreter attends a Family Court consultation, a safeguarding meeting or a women's health appointment, and the file also contains a marriage certificate from Indian or Pakistani Punjab, a police clearance certificate, education records, or a Punjab-side family document that needs to accompany a UKVI application. Certified Punjabi translation from Gurmukhi and Shahmukhi source scripts is available on request, subject to availability.
See certified document translation for the paperwork side of a Punjabi file. Where the client's formal or written material is in Urdu rather than Punjabi (common for British Pakistani Punjabi families for anything formal), our Urdu interpreter page covers that pairing. Same rate card in sterling, invoiced together on request.

Frequently Asked Questions
How quickly can you book a Punjabi interpreter in the UK?
Urgent requests are confirmed as soon as an interpreter is free, subject to availability.
How much does a Punjabi interpreter cost in the UK?
Remote (phone or video) Punjabi interpreting starts at £49.99 per 30 minutes. On-site business or medical starts at £149.99 per hour. Court and legal work and police station attendance under PACE Code C are quote only. Final price confirmed before booking, based on language, location, date, duration and availability. Minimum booking applies, and travel outside the city is quoted separately. All rates fixed in writing before the assignment. Female interpreter assignment for gender-sensitive medical, safeguarding or family work on request, subject to availability.
Can you provide a female Punjabi interpreter for gender-sensitive appointments?
On request, subject to availability: a female Punjabi interpreter can be requested for women's health clinics, maternity, gynaecology, sexual health, domestic-violence disclosure, honour-based violence casework, forced marriage protection proceedings, and any gender-sensitive medical or safeguarding setting where a female interpreter is clinically or procedurally appropriate. State the requirement at booking.
What is the difference between Gurmukhi and Shahmukhi Punjabi?
Spoken Punjabi is largely mutually intelligible across the British Sikh community (Indian Punjab origin) and the British Pakistani Punjabi community, so a single interpreter typically works across both for oral settings such as NHS appointments, court hearings or safeguarding conferences. The written scripts are however completely different: Gurmukhi is the Sikh script used for Indian Punjab Punjabi, and Shahmukhi is the Perso-Arabic script used for Pakistani Punjab Punjabi. Specify the variant at booking if written material (letters, prescription instructions, consent forms) needs to be sight-translated on the day, and we will match the interpreter accordingly.
Do you cover Punjabi for NHS mental health and women's health?
Yes, on request. On the mental health side: CAMHS assessments, adult community mental health team appointments, IAPT and geriatric dementia and memory-clinic work (first-generation cohort). On the women's health side: maternity and antenatal appointments (non-advocacy), gynaecology, sexual health, and disclosure appointments where domestic violence or honour-based violence is in scope. Female interpreter on request, subject to availability.
Do you also handle Punjabi document translation?
Yes. Certified Punjabi document translation (birth and marriage certificates, education records, police clearance, medical records, family papers from Indian or Pakistani Punjab) is available in both Gurmukhi and Shahmukhi source scripts, on request, subject to availability. Where the client's formal or written material is in Urdu rather than Punjabi, see our Urdu interpreter page; same rate card in sterling, invoiced together if you need both interpreter and translated documents on one matter.
