Why Urdu Interpreting Is Its Own Category in the UK

The British Pakistani community is around 1.6 million people per the 2021 census, second-largest South Asian minority in the UK, concentrated in Birmingham, Bradford, Manchester, London (Newham, Redbridge, Waltham Forest), Luton, Rochdale and Blackburn.

Urdu also carries a specific language boundary that other pairs do not. It is cross-intelligible with Hindi at conversational register but diverges at official, literary, legal and religious registers, so institutional work needs to be booked as Urdu specifically. Pakistani Punjabi speakers frequently prefer Urdu for anything institutional (that is the language of Pakistani education, government and formal life), though older first-generation family members are sometimes more comfortable in Punjabi and are then better served by a Punjabi booking. Female interpreter matching is not optional in gender-sensitive medical, family or safeguarding work with this community; disclosure rates in first-generation cohorts move materially on it.

Urdu Interpreter and Urdu Translation Together

Interpreting and document translation are separate services with different production paths, but the same booking can carry both. The interpreter attends a solicitor consultation about a Pakistani marriage certificate (nikah nama), a NADRA family registration certificate, a Pakistani criminal record extract, a Higher Secondary Certificate or university transcript, or a Pakistani employer letter that needs to accompany a UKVI spouse visa or ILR application. The document is then translated as a certified translation.

See document translation for the paperwork side of an Urdu file (certified Urdu translation is handled through the same hub). Same rate card in sterling, invoiced together on request.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can you book an Urdu interpreter in the UK?

Urgent requests are confirmed as soon as an interpreter is free, subject to availability.

How much does an Urdu interpreter cost in the UK?

Remote (phone or video) Urdu interpreting starts at £49.99 per 30 minutes. On-site business or medical starts at £149.99 per hour. Court and legal work and police station attendance under PACE Code C are quote only. Final price confirmed before booking, based on language, location, date, duration and availability. Minimum booking applies, and travel outside the city is quoted separately. All rates fixed in writing before the assignment. Female interpreter for gender-sensitive medical, family or safeguarding work on request, subject to availability.

Which appointments can an Urdu interpreter be booked for?

Urdu interpreting can be booked for medical, legal, immigration and council appointments.

Can you provide a female Urdu interpreter for gender-sensitive appointments?

On request, subject to availability. A female Urdu interpreter can be requested for women's health appointments (obstetrics, gynaecology, contraception, sexual health), maternity, CAMHS assessments involving girls, adult community mental health, refuge intake, honour-based violence disclosures, Forced Marriage Protection Order intake, and any solicitor consultation where the client requests a female interpreter for cultural or religious reasons. Request this at the booking stage.

Do you cover Urdu for NHS mental health and women's health?

Yes, including CAMHS, adult community mental health, women's health, maternity, and geriatric care for the first-generation cohort. In person subject to availability, and by phone or video for GP consultations, discharge planning and telehealth.

Is Urdu the same as Hindi or Punjabi?

Urdu and Hindi are cross-intelligible at conversational register but diverge substantially at official, literary, legal and religious registers. Book Urdu specifically for institutional work with British Pakistani clients: medical, Family Court, immigration, council. Punjabi (Pakistani, Shahmukhi script) is a separate language, though many Pakistani Punjabi speakers prefer Urdu for institutional settings because that is the language of Pakistani education, government and formal life. Where the client is more comfortable in Punjabi (particularly older speakers or first-generation family members), we can book a Punjabi interpreter instead. See our /punjabi-interpreter/ page for Punjabi-specific bookings.

Do you also handle Urdu document translation?

Yes. Certified Urdu document translation covering Pakistani birth certificates, marriage certificates (nikah nama), NADRA family registration certificates, Pakistani criminal record extracts, Higher Secondary Certificate and university transcripts, Pakistani employer letters and medical records is available as certified translation. See our document translation hub for the paperwork side. Same rate card in sterling, invoiced together on request if you need both interpreter and translated documents on one matter.
