When You Need a Certified Marriage Certificate Translation in the UK

A marriage certificate issued outside the UK in a language other than English or Welsh must be accompanied by a certified translation whenever a UK authority reads it as evidence of a spousal relationship, identity or civil status. The receiving body reads the translation as the working document; the source is retained for authenticity checks. Common contexts:

  • Spouse and partner visas (5-year and 10-year routes to settlement under Appendix FM): the certificate is the primary evidence of the qualifying relationship, and every substantive detail must appear on the translated page.
  • Family visa applications where a marriage certificate proves the family link between a sponsor and a dependent applicant, including child-of-relationship and parent routes.
  • ILR and British citizenship applications: for SET(M) partner-route settlement and for section 6 naturalisation applications made on a spousal basis, the marriage certificate is a required evidential document.
  • GRO and UK Register Office filings: for a subsequent UK marriage or civil partnership after a foreign ceremony, or for name-change on a UK document, the Register Office may require a certified translation of the foreign certificate.
  • Family Court proceedings and divorce petitions filed in England and Wales when the parties' original marriage took place overseas.
  • Pension, inheritance and bereavement evidence: HMRC, private pension providers and insurance companies routinely require certified translations of foreign marriage certificates to release next-of-kin or surviving-spouse entitlements.
  • NHS and consular records where a foreign spouse's status needs to be recorded on a UK trust file or on a consular register for children born abroad.

What Your Certified Translation Contains

Every certified marriage certificate translation we issue carries the four elements the Home Office looks for under Paragraph 39B of the Immigration Rules, on the same page as the translated text:

  • Statement of accuracy confirming the translation is a complete and accurate rendering of the source.
  • Date of translation so the caseworker sees the file is current.
  • Translator's full name and signature.
  • Contact details for verification.

Notarisation is not required for UKVI, for citizenship applications, or by the GRO. A certified translation on the Para 39B standard is the evidential floor.

Religious vs Civil Marriage Evidence

A civil marriage certificate is issued by a state register office and is the certificate UKVI reads first. A religious marriage certificate is issued by an officiating faith body (church, mosque, synagogue, gurdwara, temple) and may be a valid piece of civil evidence in some jurisdictions but purely religious in others. Where the marriage was celebrated religiously and the country of origin also requires a civil registration, we translate the civil register extract as the primary evidence and, if you send it too, the religious certificate as supporting evidence. Where the country recognises the religious ceremony directly (with the certificate registered by the state), we preserve the officiant's name and title, the religious body's registration reference and any state-endorsement stamp so the receiving body can trace the certificate's civil effect. For Nikah certificates, we translate the offer, acceptance, mahr amount and witness block in full, since UKVI reads each element for the genuine-marriage test.

Foreign Marriage Certificate Formats We Translate

  • Polish marriage certificates (Akt małżeństwa, odpis zupełny or odpis skrócony): the full extract carries marginal notes recording later events (divorce, death of spouse, name-change); every marginal note is translated in situ.
  • Ukrainian marriage certificates (Свідоцтво про шлюб): Cyrillic-to-Latin transliteration follows the passport spelling. Older Soviet-era certificates carry a different seal layout that we preserve.
  • Romanian marriage certificates (Certificat de căsătorie): recent extracts include an EU multilingual standard form under Regulation 2016/1191; the source column is translated in full with the standard-form code layout retained.
  • Arabic Nikah certificates: right-to-left script, mahr amount and witness block preserved. Where the certificate is registered by a state family court, the court reference is translated in situ.
  • Chinese marriage registers (结婚证): the certificate is issued in bilingual booklet form. We translate the Chinese-only entries and preserve the booklet layout.
  • Apostilled certificates: the Apostille stamp is translated in situ, with the Convention reference, issuing state, issuing authority, unique certificate number and date all preserved so the caseworker can trace the stamp back to the issuing registry.

Common Reasons Translations Get Queried

  • Untranslated Apostille or legalisation stamp: UKVI treats the legalisation block as the certificate's authenticity marker; if it is not translated, the certificate is not considered proved.
  • Untranslated marginal notes: a note recording a later divorce, a death of a spouse or a name-change is often the single most important line on the certificate.
  • Name-transliteration inconsistencies: spouse names on the marriage certificate must transliterate the same way as on both passports and both birth certificates in the pack.
  • Partial translation of a Nikah certificate: omitting the mahr amount or the witness block weakens the genuine-marriage test under Appendix FM.
  • Untranslated officiant credentials: for a religious marriage certificate, the officiant's title and the religious body's registration reference carry the civil-effect evidence and must appear on the translation.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does marriage certificate translation cost in the UK?

£39.99 per page for standard delivery. A typical marriage certificate is 1 to 2 pages. Handwriting adds £9.99 per page and a posted hard copy is £19.99 flat. Fixed price, no hidden fees.

Do I need a marriage certificate translation for a spouse visa?

Yes. If your marriage certificate is not in English or Welsh, UKVI requires a certified translation compliant with Paragraph 39B of the Immigration Rules for both the initial spouse-route application and any subsequent extension or SET(M) settlement application.

Is notarisation required for marriage certificate translation?

No.

How long does marriage certificate translation take?

Standard delivery is 24 hours for 1 to 3 pages, 36 hours for 4 to 6 pages, and 48 hours for 7 to 10 pages. If you need it sooner, Prioritise for £59.99 per page and it is within 12 hours.

Do you translate the Apostille or legalisation stamp too?

Yes, and this matters. The Apostille stamp is translated in situ, with the Convention reference, issuing state, issuing authority, unique certificate number and date all preserved.

What if my marriage certificate is a religious document (Nikah, church record)?

Religious marriage certificates are translated in full including the officiant's credentials, the parties' details and any state-endorsement stamp that gives the certificate civil effect. For Nikah certificates, the offer, acceptance, mahr amount and witness block are all translated as UKVI reads each element for the Appendix FM genuine-marriage test.

What does the GRO need for a UK marriage notice?

Check with the Register Office. Individual Register Offices may ask for the source alongside the translation for cross-check.

Can you translate a certificate with marginal notes recording a later divorce?

Yes. Marginal notes recording later events (divorce, death of spouse, name-change) are translated in situ rather than consolidated at the end.
