When You Need a Certified Birth Certificate Translation in the UK

A birth certificate issued in a language other than English or Welsh must be accompanied by a certified translation for nearly every UK administrative or legal purpose that reads it as evidence of identity or family relationship. The receiving body reads the translation as the working document, cross-referenced against the source for authenticity; a partial or paraphrased translation is treated as unusable evidence. Common contexts:

  • UKVI visa applications: the spouse route, the family route, the child route, the parent route and dependent applications all rest on birth certificates as the primary evidence of family relationship. Both parents' details must appear on the translated certificate.
  • British citizenship and naturalisation: applications under section 6 of the British Nationality Act 1981 require certified translations of the applicant's birth certificate and, in many cases, of the parents' certificates too where descent is being relied on.
  • Indefinite Leave to Remain: dependants included on a settlement application need their own birth certificate translated in full, showing both parents.
  • UK Register Office and General Register Office (GRO): for a foreign-born spouse or child to be added to a UK register, or for a subsequent UK marriage licence, the Register Office may require a certified translation of the foreign birth certificate.
  • Court proceedings: family, probate and civil courts routinely require certified translations of foreign birth certificates as evidence of parentage, next-of-kin status or beneficiary identity.
  • Schools, colleges and NHS registration: many school admissions offices and NHS primary-care networks ask for a certified translation of a child's birth certificate to establish age and identity for enrolment.
  • Adoption records and legitimation certificates: overseas adoption orders, Convention adoption certificates (Hague 1993) and post-adoption re-registration notes all sit alongside the birth certificate and must be translated together.
  • Overseas registration of a British child: consular re-registration and passport applications for a child born abroad rely on the foreign birth certificate as the primary identity document.

What Your Certified Translation Contains

Every certified birth certificate translation we issue carries the four elements the Home Office looks for under Paragraph 39B of the Immigration Rules, on the same page as the translated text:

  • Statement of accuracy confirming the translation is a complete and accurate rendering of the source.
  • Date of translation so the caseworker sees the file is current.
  • Translator's full name and signature.
  • Contact details for verification.

Notarisation is not required for UKVI, for citizenship applications, or by the GRO. A certified translation on the Para 39B standard is the evidential floor; adding a notary step adds cost and delay without adding evidential weight.

Foreign Birth Certificate Formats We Translate

Foreign birth certificates carry format quirks that shape the translation. We keep every one of them intact so the receiving body can trace back to the source:

  • Polish birth certificates (Akt urodzenia, odpis zupełny or odpis skrócony): the full extract (zupełny) carries marginal notes recording later events (marriage, name-change, legitimation); we translate every marginal note in situ rather than consolidating them at the end.
  • Ukrainian birth certificates (Свідоцтво про народження): Cyrillic-to-Latin transliteration follows the passport spelling. Older Soviet-era certificates issued by ЗАГС registries carry a different seal layout that we preserve.
  • Romanian birth certificates (Certificat de naștere): recent extracts include an EU multilingual standard form; we translate the source column and preserve the standard-form code layout.
  • Arabic-script birth certificates: the name-and-parentage block reads right-to-left; the translation preserves the reading order and adds an English transliteration matching the passport.
  • Chinese Hukou household register entries: where the household register replaces a stand-alone birth certificate, we translate the relevant entries with the register cover page for context.
  • Multilingual EU standard forms (Regulation 2016/1191): the source column is translated in full, and the standard-form code references are retained so the receiving body can cross-check the format.

Common Reasons Translations Get Queried

  • Selective translation: applicants translate only the child's section and omit one or both parents' details. Both parents' full names and dates of birth must appear on the translated page.
  • Untranslated marginal notes: a marginal note recording a re-registration, an adoption or a name-change is often the single most important line on a foreign birth certificate; UKVI reads it before reading the main block.
  • Name-transliteration inconsistencies: parent, child and sponsor names must transliterate the same way on every document in the pack. A birth certificate that spells the child's name differently to the passport triggers an identity query.
  • Untranslated seals and marginal stamps: the sealed block is the certificate's authenticity marker. A translated certificate that omits the seal is not considered proved.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does birth certificate translation cost in the UK?

£39.99 per page for standard delivery. A typical birth certificate is 1 page. Handwriting adds £9.99 per page and a posted hard copy is £19.99 flat. Fixed price, no hidden fees.

How long does birth certificate translation take?

Standard delivery is 24 hours for 1 to 3 pages, 36 hours for 4 to 6 pages, and 48 hours for 7 to 10 pages. If you need it sooner, Prioritise for £59.99 per page and it is within 12 hours.

Do I need a notarised birth certificate translation for UKVI?

No. Paragraph 39B of the Immigration Rules requires a certified translation with a Statement of Accuracy, translation date, translator name and signature, and translator contact details. Notarisation is not required by UKVI or by the GRO.

Which languages do you translate birth certificates from?

200+ languages including Polish, Ukrainian, Romanian, Russian, Arabic, Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, Chinese, Turkish, Portuguese, Spanish, French, German, Italian, and many others. Non-Roman scripts are handled with transliteration matching the passport spelling.

Do you translate both parents' details on the certificate?

Yes, and this is important. Both parents' full names, dates of birth and any marginal notes recording a legitimation, an adoption or a re-registration must appear on the translated page.

What about marginal notes on a Polish odpis zupełny or a Ukrainian свідоцтво?

Marginal notes recording later events (marriage, name-change, legitimation, adoption, re-registration) are translated in situ rather than consolidated at the end.

Can you translate a Convention adoption certificate alongside the birth certificate?

Yes. Hague 1993 Convention adoption certificates, overseas adoption orders and post-adoption re-registration notes are translated as part of the same certified pack and priced at the standard £39.99 per page rate.

What does the GRO need for a UK marriage notice?

Check with the Register Office. Individual Register Offices may ask for the source alongside the translation for cross-check.
