Documents Requiring Translation for a UK Standard Visitor Visa
Under Appendix V of the Immigration Rules, UKVI caseworkers assess a visitor application on funds, ties to the home country, sponsor credibility and intended activities in the UK. Any document supplied in evidence that is not in English or Welsh must be accompanied by a full certified translation. The evidence pack typically contains:
- Bank statements (6 months) covering the applicant's current account, savings and any joint account with a spouse or sponsor. Running balance, salary credits and large transactions all need to be readable in English by the caseworker.
- Employer letters and employment contracts confirming position, salary, length of service and the dates of authorised leave. Home Office scrutiny of tie-to-country evidence rests on the letter reading as an original, not a summary.
- Payslips (last 3 to 6 months) matching the salary figure stated in the employer letter. Gross, net, tax and social security lines must all appear on the translation.
- Property deeds, mortgage statements or tenancy agreements demonstrating a fixed address and ongoing obligations in the home country.
- Sponsor invitation letter from the UK-based host, translated where the original is issued in another language. Address, immigration status of the sponsor and duration of the invitation must be preserved.
- Business registration and tax filings for self-employed applicants, including company incorporation extracts and recent VAT or income-tax returns.
- Pension statements and dependant allowances where the visit is being funded from retirement income or family support.
- Marriage and birth certificates establishing the relationship to a UK sponsor or accompanying family members.
Why UKVI Refuses Visitor Visa Applications on Translation Issues
A visitor application can be refused under Paragraph V 4.2 of Appendix V for insufficient evidence even when the underlying documents are strong. Where the caseworker is looking at a foreign-language statement or letter without a compliant translation, the safer decision for them is to refuse rather than infer. Common translation-side reasons for refusal:
- Missing Statement of Accuracy on the translated pack: no signed declaration that the translation is complete and accurate.
- Untranslated stamps and marginal notes on bank or civil documents. UKVI treats an untranslated stamp as if it were not in evidence at all.
- Name and date-of-birth transliterations that do not match the passport, particularly for applicants from countries using Cyrillic, Arabic or Chinese scripts.
- Currency and amount formatting that leaves the caseworker to convert or interpret. We keep the source figure and add an English gloss, never a converted number that could later be disputed.
- Selective translation: only translating pages the applicant thought were important. A partial translation of a six-month bank statement will fail the maintenance-funds test.
Prepared to UKVI Para 39B requirements
Paragraph 39B of the Immigration Rules sets the four elements a Home Office caseworker checks on any foreign-language document submitted with an application. Every certified translation we send for a visitor visa carries all four on the same page as the translated text:
- Statement of accuracy from the translator confirming the translation is a true and complete rendering of the original.
- Date of translation so the caseworker can see the file is current, not months out of the application window.
- Translator's full name and signature, not the agency's trading name alone.
- Contact details for verification.
Notarisation is not required. UKVI does not accept notarised translations in preference to Para 39B certified translations, and adding a notary step slows the pack down for no evidential benefit.
Format Matching for UKVI Casework
The translation mirrors the layout of the original document page-by-page so the caseworker can cross-reference at a glance. Stamps, seals, signatures and marginal notes are described in situ, not consolidated at the end of the file. Multi-page bank statements retain their pagination and running balance. Where a foreign document uses a table (bank ledger, employer letter with salary schedule, tenancy schedule) the translation reproduces the same rows and columns rather than reflowing the content as prose. Names are transliterated to match the applicant's passport spelling on every page and, where the original uses a patronymic or matronymic, both the transliteration and an English gloss are supplied.

Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What documents need certified translation for a UK visitor visa?
Bank statements and financial records, employer letters and employment contracts, payslips, property deeds or tenancy agreements, sponsor letters from UK-based contacts, business registration documents for self-employed applicants, pension statements, and any identity documents not in English.
How much does visitor visa translation cost?
£39.99 per page for standard delivery, fixed price with no hidden fees. Handwriting adds £9.99 per page and a posted hard copy is £19.99 flat. A typical visitor-visa pack of a 6-month bank statement, an employer letter and a sponsor letter is priced page by page depending on the document length.
How quickly can I get visitor visa documents translated?
Standard delivery is 24 hours for 1 to 3 pages, 36 hours for 4 to 6 pages, and 48 hours for 7 to 10 pages. Prioritise gives a 12-hour delivery aim.
Is notarisation required for a UK visitor visa translation?
No. Paragraph 39B of the Immigration Rules requires a certified translation with a signed Statement of Accuracy, the translation date, the translator's full name and signature, and the translator's contact details. Notarisation is not required and does not improve the strength of the application.
Do I need to translate every page of my bank statement?
Yes. UKVI treats a partial translation of a bank statement as unusable evidence. Every page in the requested set (usually six months) must be translated, with the running balance, salary credits, and any large transactions all readable in English.
What if my name is spelled differently on my documents and passport?
We transliterate the name on every translated page to match the passport spelling exactly, and note the source spelling alongside it. Cyrillic, Arabic, Chinese and Thai script names are handled to the passport's transliteration rules so the caseworker sees one consistent identity across the pack.
Can you translate my sponsor's UK documents into another language?
Yes. Sponsor documents originally issued in English that need to be translated for a co-applicant, or documents issued in Welsh, are covered by the same £39.99/page rate. A Statement of Accuracy is issued in both directions.
Can I use the translation if I apply from outside the UK?
Our certified translations are prepared to the Paragraph 39B format UKVI publishes. The Statement of Accuracy carries our full contact details for verification.
